The inspiration for Umbu came from the simple idea that an adjustable desk lamp should be easy to move, enjoyable to use, and durable. Juliana Bertolucci and her team focused on creating a smooth and light movement in every direction possible, using the simplest and most resistant mechanic system.
What sets Umbu apart is its organic movement and the value it places on natural materials. The lamp offers a continuous and soft movement, with a triple articulation that allows the stem to turn to both sides and adjust the degree of inclination. The reflector also has a diverse set of movements. The design is a symbiosis of brass, metal, Brazilian solid wood, and granite stone, creating a smooth touch experience.
The realization of Umbu involved brass and woodturning, MIG welding, hand-brushed finishing for brass parts, and black lacquering for the aluminum part. The base is made of hammered granite. The technical specifications include a height of 35 cm, a length of 75 cm, and a diameter of 11 cm. It uses a single LED Dicróica GU10 bulb.
Umbu is a testament to the durability, smooth movement, and Brazilian design. It was a collaborative effort, with Juliana Bertolucci leading the design and production development, assisted by Clement Gerard and the Bertolucci Team. The project started in 2018 and was completed recently.
The design process involved extensive research to reduce frictions between parts, achieving a balance between a smooth movement and an uncontrolled movement. The challenge was to create a simple and strong mechanic system that allows smooth and light movement in every direction. Umbu is a Brazilian desk lamp that values natural materials and handcraft. The experience of touching the solid wood reflector is smooth, adding to the overall user experience.
Umbu was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
